About Dr. David James
Dr. David James is an internationally known leader and expert on training, establishing, and evaluating mentoring programs. He has made numerous presentations on mentor and protégé training, and the essential elements for comprehensive formalized mentoring programs. His experience includes conducting “Best Practices” workshops for the Dupont Corporation that linked community, corporate, and educational programs. He also served as a training and mentoring consultant for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, where he trained leaders in mentorships to combat and reduce substance abuse in their respective states and communities.
Having served the longest tenure as President of the International Mentoring Association from 1989 to 2000, Dr. James was honored when the Association named him President Emeritus. Dr. James has conducted workshops for and provided consulting services to corporations, colleges and universities,
Previously, Dr. James served as Dean of Educational Development and Degree/Extension Centers and Special Programs at Prince George’s Community College in Largo, MD, where he received the President’s Medal, the highest award given to an employee of the college, in 2007. Dr. James was also honored by the college in 1988 as the Outstanding Administrator for his work in mentoring and student retention. At the time, he served as the Project Director of the Black and Minority Dr. James has written extensively on the subject of mentoring and retention in such publications as the International Journal of Mentoring and New Directions for Community Colleges. The mentoring and retention programs at Prince George’s Community College have been featured in Black Issues in Higher Education. He co-authored Mentoring in Higher Education: Best Practices and Mentoring Guide for Community Colleges; and authored a chapter entitled, “Models in Mentoring Through Faculty Development”, in Mentoring and Diversity in Higher Education (Volume 1, 1997). Dr. James received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Science from Elizabeth City State University, Elizabeth City, NC; a Master of Arts Degree in World History, from Georgetown University, Washington, DC, and an Doctor of Education Degree, specializing in retention and supporting fields, from Nova University, Fort Lauderdale, FL.
